What are the success rates for OIU in my Stricture?
OIU / VIU / DVIU are all names for endoscopic procedures for treating Urethral Strictures.
This means Using a cystoscope, a light and a sharp instrument to create space around the narrow area
To make urine pass easily and freely
Unlike Urethroplasty, OIU is a small procedure with maximum of one day admission and that is why
Every patient with urethral Stricture wants to know: Is my treatment possible
With Endoscopy (OIU or DVIU) Or Will I be requiring an Open Surgery (Urethroplasty) ?
- For Strictures to be treated with OIU/VIU there must be some passage across the narrow
Area enough to pass a wire. These treatments are not meant for complete blocks where
Reconstruction becomes necessary - Ideal Strictures to treat with OIU/DVIU are a. Bulbar strictures, b. Small <1.5 cm long
Stricture and c. Strictures which have not been treated previously
OIU/VIU Always succeed initially, but in poorly selected patients, the stricture always comes back
In well selected patients, the success rates of OIU may be even 80-85%
